Using pixillion, which i paid for, I was experiencing a color shift (and loss of warmth) in photos when converting jpg to avif. Below is a workflow that preserves color integrity.
Tool: XnConvert (free)
- Size images
Before converting, make sure all images are 2500px wide or less. I did this using photoshop batch processing, keeping the jpg quality at 12 (the highest).
You aren’t trying to optimize the images in photoshop, just make sure that they are not huge. - Install XnConvert
https://www.xnconvert.com/ - Add images
Open → Drag your entire folder of images in. - Set Up the Conversion (Only Once — saves as a preset)
Go to the Output tab:- Check “preserve color profile“
- Under filename it will say {Filename}_result, remove “_result”.
You want the same filename but changed from jpg to avif. - Format: AVIF
- Click the little gear icon ⚙️ next to AVIF.
- Quality: 80
- Keep other settings
After processing the avifs, compare to the jpgs and make sure that the warmth is preserved and there is no color shift.
